Frank Pettry was born about 1900. His father is John and his mother is Sarah. Pettry was but eighteen years of age and at the very outbreak of the war enlisted in the cause of his country, not waiting to be drafted but volunteering his services. As the result he was one of the first to see action on the part of the American troops in France. He was assigned to a machine gun company of the 18th Infantry, a part of the First Division. According to reports received by the American Legion, Pettry did gallant service in the battle in which he fell. His Company was holding a position under attack by the Germans. Nearly all of his comrades had fallen either killed or wounded and for some little time he held the position, operating a machine gun against the attacking enemy. Finally he fell mortally wounded on July 20, 1918. He was buried in France beside many of his comrades who fell in the same engagment. He is now buried in American Legion Cemetery, Beckley, Raleigh County, West Virginia, USA.
