When James Hill Holmes was born on October 9, 1895, in Charleston, South Carolina, his father, James, was 27 and his mother, Septima, was 26. He married Anne Adela Folline on March 30, 1917, in his hometown. They had one child during their marriage. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Captain in the 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. After having bravely led his company in three attacks in two days near Soissons, France, July 18-19, 1918, he was killed in a fourth attack, while charging an enemy machine gun. He is now buried in Magnolia Cemetery, Charleston, Charleston County, South Carolina, USA.
