When Clinton Van Pelt Newbold was born on February 23, 1892, in Norwood, Pennsylvania, his father, Benjamin, was 35 and his mother, Harriet, was 32. He married Grace Bartram Newbold and they had one son together. He then married Alice Barnes Eldridge on August 20, 1917, in District of Columbia. Clinton graduated Penn State before enlisting in the army, he was a Lieutenant, Army Transport Chief in Theodore Roosevelt Jr.'s battalion. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I in the 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on July 19, 1918 and is now buried in Oise-Aisne American Cemetery, Seringes-et- Nesles, France. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross posthumously.
