When Fred Elven Aune was born on February 11, 1893, in Oregon City, Oregon, his father, Borre, was 29 and his mother, Elizabeth, was 30. He had one brother. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company C, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on July 21, 1918. Originally, Fred's body was wrapped in burlap and hurriedly buried in a shell hole on the battlefield near Aisne, France. Eventually, Fred's remains were re-interred and now rest at Oise-Aisne American Cemetery. In 1920, he was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. His name is inscribed on the Buzancy monument as Aume.
