168th Engineer Combat Battalion Stele

<< Back to St. Vith East

Details:

The monument is located on the opposite side of a small dirt road from a religious shrine. It is at the back of the small rock and mulch garden that constitutes the site. Monument This gray stone stele stands impressively tall and features an engraving of the seal of the United States Army near the top of the stele. Additionally, the monument describes (in English) the accomplishments of the 168th Engineer Battalion in relation to the battle for St. Vith and the subsequent accolades which the unit was awarded, including the Distinguished Unit Citation and the Belgian Croix de Guerre.

The 168th Engineer Combat Battalion was activated on May 5, 1943, at Fort Carson, Colorado, and served throughout France and into Central Europe as part of several armies, including Patton's 3rd (with whom the 168th Engineer Combat Battalion landed at Normandy).
