Details:

On the east side of Purvis Bay on the shore. Combat Vehicle The bow of LST (Landing Ship Tank)- 342, rusting, but hull number still visible.


LST- 342 was part of LST Group 14 during the occupation of New Georgia as part of Operation Cartwheel. The ship was lost July 18, 1943 when it was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine (Ro-106) in the Solomon Sea near Rendova. (The ship broke in two, with the stern sinking immediately. The bow was towed and beached at Florida Island.) Eighty-one officers and men were lost to include the LST Group 14 Commander, Commander Paul S. Slawson.
