Edward C. Manchester, Jr. was born in 1922 in Bristol County, Massachusetts. He was the son of Edward C. and Freda E. Manchester.

He joined the U.S. Army Air Forces, 507th Fighter Squadron, 404th Fighter Group, on June 3rd, 1944, being assigned from HQ squadron, 495th Fighter Training Group. He was Killed in Action on August 20, 1944, while piloting the P-47D 42-25722 'Birdie,' during an armed reconnaissance mission in France. He was shot down in an aerial combat with six FW190 fighters, and his plane crashed into Rouen.

2Lt Manchester is now buried in the Normandy American Cemetery, Colleville-Sur-Mer, France.
