Berardi Brothers Memorial Plaque- San Marino

The memorial is a polished inscribed white marble Italian style gravestone with pictures of the two brothers mounted to the marble.

 

The plaque remembers two brothers and former citizens of San Marino who immigrated to the United States and then served as US Soldiers during the Second World War. 

 

Roberto (Robert) Berardi was born on March 21, 1922 in Faetano, San Marino.  After immigrating to the United States the Berardi family settled in Ohio.  Robert attended Sandusky High School and then Bowling green University.  During would War 2, he enlisted in served in the 407th Infantry Regiment, 102nd Infantry Division.  On February 24, 1945, the 102nd Infantry Division participated in the Roer River crossings as part of Operation Grenade.  SGT Robert Berardi fell while attaching near the German villages near Linnach and Glimbach.  He was almost 23 years old. Robert is buried in the Netherlands American Cemetery with a memorial stone on the family plot in San Marino.

 

Robert’s younger brother Leonello (Nello) Berardi was also born in Faetano, San Marino on March 1, 1925. Nello attended Sandusky High School and enlisted in The US Army in World War 2 serving in the 7th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division.  During Operation Diadem (4th Battle of Cassino) the 3rd Infantry Division attacked out of the Anzio Beachhead. Nello Berardi fell on May 29, 1944 during this operation near Cisterna, Italy.  He was 19 years old.  He is buried in the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery in Nettuno, Italy with a memorial plaque on the family plot in San Marino.
