Robert and Nello Berardi were US Soldiers born in the Republic of San Marino. Leonello (Nello) Berardi was born in Faetano, San Marino on March 1, 1925. Nello attended Sandusky High School and enlisted in The US Army in World War 2 serving in the 7th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division. During Operation Diadem (4th Battle of Cassino) the 3rd Infantry Division attacked out of the Anzio Beachhead. Nello Berardi fell on May 29, 1944 during this operation near Cisterna, Italy. He was 19 years old. He is buried in the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery in Nettuno, Italy with a memorial plaque on the family plot in San Marino.
