Monument

A two-meter high and two-meter wide monument which consists of a wooden frame on which the propeller of a Lancaster and plaques were mounted.

On February 15, 1944, the Lancaster ND363 PM-K crashed at the site where this monument stands. The monument commemorates the 189 Allied war pilots who died on or near Texel during the Second World War where more than 40 planes have crashed. Most victims are buried on the Commonwealth property at Den Burg General Cemetery. It was unveiled on 4 May 1984 by former war pilot P. van Hessen.

The monument also honors American airman Eugene Darter of the 95th Bomber Group, who was killed on Texel on 16 December 1943 while serving on the B-17 (42-30255) 'Lonesome Polecat II'.
