A small inscribed brass plaque just above ground level.

 

On October 9, 1944, B-24 “Sack Time (42-94841) of the 857th Bomber Squadron, 492nd Bomber Group “The Carpetbaggers” was on a training mission flying out of their home base of Harrington.  The plane crashed in poor visibility hitting the northern edge of Twizle Head Moss above Holmfirth.  

 

Eight of the crew were killed; one missing in action (Watson), and one crew member, Staff Sergeant Curtis Anderson, survived.

 

The purpose of the operation Carpetbagger project was to fly “Special Operations” to deliver supplies to resistance groups in enemy occupied countries; to deliver personnel to the field and occasionally to bring back personnel from the field.

 

 

The crew of “Sack Time” included:

The only survivor of the crash was S/SGT Curtis Anderson.  He passed away 16th January 1988 from injuries sustained in this crash.
