Monument Text:
The text on the memorial is inscribed in Dutch, English and Japanese. The English on the center portion reads:
FUKUOKA No 2 PRISONER OF WAR CAMP
The camp on this site was established in October 1942 during the Second World War and at its peak held 1,500 Allied Prisoners mostly Dutch, British, American and Australian. They were forced to work at the Kawanam Shipyard in breach of the then current international treaties and by their evacuation on September 13, 1945, 73 had perished as a result of the inhumane treatment they suffered.
In memory of those who lived in such harsh circumstances to which some of them succumbed, and with a proud sense of remorse, we proclaim our everlasting hopes for an everlasting peace in this world.
