Stuart Light Tank Memorial
Details:

Marker
A standing rectangular stele bearing a rectangular bronze plaque erected by the Normandy 44 association. The plaque bears the names of six men: four crew members of a Stuart light tank of the 712th Tank Battalion and two soldiers who were on the vehicle when it exploded.
In the late afternoon of July 27, 1944, after Périers had been liberated by the 90th American Infantry Division, the advance of American troops toward Coutances was halted by five German tanks. While awaiting the arrival of suitable weaponry, a platoon of light Stuart tanks was sent along this road. But this road had been booby-trapped by the Germans. The first tank on the road, which is commemorated on this memorial, hit a mine, killing four and seriously wounding two. Pushed to the side of the road, the wreckage of the tank remained there long after the war.
