An inscribed Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) memorial headstone.
On December 10, 1943, four flight crews from the elite No. 617 "Dambusters" Squadron RAF were temporarily detached to RAF Tempsford to conduct highly secretive Special Operations Executive (SOE) supply drop missions (codenamed "arms drops") to the French Resistance. Lancaster ED 825, one of the original "Dambuster" aircraft, was shot down during this operation. The entire crew was killed in action during this covert mission to include two Americans, Warrant Officer Edward Walters (Bombardier) and Warrant Officer Robert Cummings (Rear Gunner).
