Plaque

A rectangular blue plaque commemorating the liberation of Vy-les-Lure by L Company, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division on September 16, 1944. The insignias on the top represent the Vy-lès-Lure blason and the U.S., along with the insignia of the 3rd Infantry Division ("Rock of the Marne"). The plaque is written in French and English.

On September 16, 1944, under the command of Captain Ralph J. Yates, after a seven-hour battle, L Company, though heavily outnumbered, managed to repel all German counterattacks. The enemy force was approximately three times larger than the American unit, making the victory particularly notable. Despite the overwhelming odds, L Company’s determination and strategic defense led to the successful liberation of the village. The battle resulted in 37 U.S. casualties, underscoring the intensity of the fight. The company was awarded the Distinguished Unit Citation for its actions during the liberation.
