Plaque
A rectangular white plaque commemorating Pvt Delbert Longworth who died on August 22, 1944. The plaque is written in French.
On August 22, 1944, during the 7th Armored Division's advance toward the Seine River, a reconnaissance jeep from the 40th Tank Battalion's Headquarters Company was scouting for river crossings near Ballancourt. The team, consisting of 2nd Lt. Woodrow H. McCormack, Pfc. George R. Burhance (driver), and Pvt. Delbert J. Longworth was joined by two French citizens, including Robert Coudray, in Echarcon to guide them to a bridge over the Essone River. While navigating around mines, the team came under German fire. As they attempted to escape, their jeep hit a mine, killing Robert Coudray and Pvt. Longworth.
