503rd Parachute Infantry Flag Raising Corregidor 1945 Monument

<< Back to Corregidor Island- Top Side Parade Field West Woods

Details:

Down a wooded path about 75 feet from the west edge of the  parade field.

Monument

A concrete monument and flagpole holder with four inscribed sides.

The memorial remembers the first flag to be flown on Corregidor Island since its capture by the enemy in 1942.

On February 16, 1945 Pfc. Clyde I. Bates and T/5 Frank 'Guy' Arrigo, both of the 503rd Parachute Regiment (PIR) raised the  American flag over Corregidor Island. These men climbed the tallest remaining pole under Japanese sniper fire and flew the American flag for the first time since the surrender of the island 2 1/2 years ago. The 503rd PIR was part of the "Rock Force" which recaptured Corregidor Island in February 1945.
