LE 29 JUIN 1944, CHUTE D'UN APPAREIL AMÉRICAIN P38 LIGHTNING J-10-LO

L'appareil revenait d'une mission de mitraillage et de bombardement en piqué sur Tillières-sur-Avre (27). Il a quitté sa formation aux environs de L'Aigle et n'a plus donné de nouvelles. Victime probablement d'une panne moteur ou d'un manque de carburant, l'avion s'écrase dans la « Campagne des Lisses » (La Barre-en-Ouche). Maurice LEMOINE, de La Barre-en-Ouche, précise qu'avant de s'écraser l'avion tournait en rond dans la brume cherchant probablement a se poser.
Le 2nd Lieutenant Paul HEUERMANN a été retrouvé avec son parachute dans son enveloppe (lieu-dit la «Mare Sangsue» d'Epinay). Il a dû être accroché par la dérive de son avion et tué sur le coup ou dans l'impossibilité de déclencher l'ouverture de son parachute.
Pierre GIBOURDEL, d'Epinay, se souvient que le pilote a été inhumé dans son parachute. Les Allemands étant absents lors de l'inhumation, c'est son père André GIBOURDEL, alors maire de la commune, qui en a assuré l'organisation.
Quelques jours après la libération, deux américains se sont présentés pour récupérer les affaires du pilote. En 1945, les américains, accompagnés de prisonniers Allemands, ont relevé le corps. Il est inhumé à Colleville-sur-Mer (14), tombe A-19-41. Paul HEUERMANN avait 27 ans.

JUNE 29, 1944, THE CRASH OF AN AMERICAN AIRCRAFT P38 LIGHTNING J-10-LO

The aircraft was returning from a strafing and dive-bombing mission over Tillières-sur-Avre (27). It left its formation near L'Aigle and was never heard from again. Probably a victim of an engine failure or a lack of fuel, the plane crashed in the "Campagne des Lisses" (La Barre-en-Ouche). Maurice LEMOINE, from La Barre-en-Ouche, said that before crashing the plane was circling in the fog, probably trying to land.

The 2nd Lieutenant Paul HEUERMANN was found with his parachute still in its harness (place called "Mare Sangsue" in Epinay). He might have been caught by the draft of his plane and killed instantly or because he was unable to open his parachute.

Pierre GIBOURDEL, from Epinay, remembers that the pilot was buried in his parachute. As the Germans were not present at the burial, his father André GIBOURDEL, then mayor of the commune, organized the burial.

A few days after the liberation, two Americans showed up to collect the pilot's belongings. In 1945, the Americans, accompanied by German prisoners, recovered the body. He is buried at Colleville-sur-Mer (14), grave A-19-41. Paul HEUERMANN was 27 years old.
