1Lt Clemens A. Fiedler Plaque
Details:
At the foot, on the west side of the monument.
A rectangular, black plaque inscribed with a commemoration message that is written in French in gold lettering. On April 10, 1944, 1Lt Fiedler was struck by flak while strafing Romarantin Airdrome in France. His mustang was streaming black oil and glycol. Having to evacuate his P-51, he jumped to a reasonable altitude. However, his parachute did not open. The body of 1Lt Fiedler was not recovered until two days later, two kilometers from the point where his plane fell. His body had been stripped of almost all his personal belongings by an unidentified individual. 1Lt Fiedler was buried in the village cemetery and the local residents made donations to erect a stele in his honor.
A meticulous investigation by the police led to the discovery of the thief who was immediately referred to the Public Prosecutor. It was then that the pilot could be identified. A silver medal with its chain, two coins, and a whistle was found. Also, a photo of 1Lt Fiedler was found by the police in the house of the robber and deposited at the town hall of Soizé.
