Five miles northeast of the airport set among several other memorials. Monument


An obelisk shaped memorial on a base with two inscribed plaques and the symbol of the China-India Burma Theater in the center. The monument is also known as the China Expedition Army Monument.

The memorial remembers the Battle of Myitkyina and the taking of the critical airfield by Allied Forces (Chinese Expeditionary Forces) lead by Merrill's Marauders in May - August 1944. Merrill's Marauders or 5307th Composite Unit, was led by General Frank Merrill and during this battle by Colonel Charles Hunter. The victory came after a long march through dense jungle under very adverse conditions. Merrill's Marauders were also know as Galahad unit.
