Plaque

A rectangular bronze plaque with the 35th Infantry Division insignia on the upper part. The plaque contains the names and ranks of the soldiers who died on August 1-2, 1944, during the liberation of Domjean, written in French. The 35th Infantry Division was involved in the Normandy Campaign following the D-Day landings on June 6, 1944. The division was tasked with advancing through Normandy and liberating French towns from German occupation.

On August 1, 1944, the 35th Infantry Division launched attacks in the Domjean area, encountering strong German resistance. The terrain and well-prepared German defensive positions created significant challenges for the advancing American forces. The division's maneuvering involved coordinating multiple battalions to overcome the German defenses. The combat was part of a broader strategy to clear the area and move towards other objectives in Normandy.

On August 2, 1944, the fighting continued as the 35th Infantry Division pushed to secure Domjean and the surrounding area. The division faced heavy artillery and mortar fire, and the combat was characterized by close-quarter engagements and attempts to break through German lines. The battle resulted in significant casualties on both sides. The intense fighting led to heavy losses among the American troops, including members of the 35th Infantry Division like Private Walter Kado. Despite the fierce resistance, the efforts of the 35th Infantry Division contributed to the gradual liberation of the Normandy region. The successful operations around Domjean helped the Allies advance further into occupied France.
