Monument
A gray stone monument commemorating American soldiers of Commando #3 and 2Lt Loustalot who died during the battle in Bernaval in August 1942. The monument is written in French.
Operation Jubilee, also known as the Dieppe Raid (August 19, 1942), was an Allied amphibious attack aimed at testing German defenses on the French coast. One objective was to neutralize a German coastal battery at Berneval-le-Grand, assigned to No. 3 Commando. The raid at Berneval encountered heavy resistance, scattering the attacking flotilla and preventing most of the commandos from reaching the target. However, a small team led by Lieutenant Peter Young climbed the cliffs and disrupted the German gunners, reducing the battery's effectiveness.
During the operation, 2nd Lieutenant Augustin H. Loustalot, a U.S. Army Ranger who had joined No. 3 Commando, was killed. Loustalot became the first American soldier to die in action on European soil during World War II. He was fatally wounded while leading an assault on the German positions, trying to scale the cliffs at Berneval.
Although the raid was largely unsuccessful, resulting in heavy Allied casualties, it provided valuable lessons for future amphibious operations, particularly the Normandy landings in 1944.
