Willie J. Staples was born in May 1899 in Morgan County, Alabama. He was the son of George Ruffus Staples Sr. and Amanda C. Oaks Staples. He entered the military service in Alabama. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company F, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on July 19, 1918 and is now buried in Oise-Aisne American Cemetery, Seringes-et- Nesles, France.
