When John Math Hafner was born on April 20, 1892, in Mooreton, North Dakota, his father, Adolph, was 39 and his mother, Helena, was 30. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Corporal in Company H, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division.
