When Edson Lafayette Toomey was born on February 28, 1896, in Helenwood, Tennessee, his father, John, was 34 and his mother, Elizabeth, was 22. He had two brothers and one sister. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private First Class in Company H, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on July 19, 1918 and is now buried in Oise-Aisne American Cemetery, Seringes-et- Nesles, France.
