When Arthur Martin Handstad was born on October 26, 1899, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, his father, John, was 33 and his mother, Julia, was 26. He attended Minneapolis South High School and worked as a clerk in a hardware store in Crosby, North Dakota. He joined the Home Guards in Crosby, North Dakota in September 1917. He trained at Camp Greene, North Carolina, Camp Mills, Hempstead, New York, and Camp Merritt, New Jersey. He went to Europe in December 1917 but was killed in action by a shell burst on July 19, 1918 in France (at the age of 18). He is now buried in Crystal Lake Cemetery, Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota, USA. He also has a cenotaph in Victory Memorial Drive, Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota, USA. His surname is inscribed on the Buzancy monument as Hanstady.
