Don Lassen served in the 550th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division. He participated in two combat jumps, one over Normandy and the other over Holland, and went on to fight in the Battle of the Bulge and into Germany itself. He ended the war by serving with the 82nd Airborne Division during its occupation duty in Berlin. His newsletter, the "Static Line" (a reference to the cord which opens paratroopers' parachutes in an aircraft), was a popular means for former paratroopers to stay informed about their colleagues.
