Thomas R. Cottingham was born on April 12, 1902 in Dillon County, South Carolina. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. T. T. Cottingham of Dillon, S.C. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Dillon. He enlisted in September 1916 at age 15 and was the first Dillon County boy to go to France for overseas service. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private First Class in Company B, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action but declared "Missing" on July 19, 1918 and is memorialized on Tablets of the Missing, Aisne-Marne American Cemetery, Belleau, France.
