James A. Caudle was born on March 18, 1898 in Baywood, Grayson County, Virginia. He was the son of Lafayette and Susan Caudle. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company C, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on July 22, 1918, at the age of 20 in France. He was initially buried in Cimetière Américain de Ploisy, Ploisy, Departement de l'Aisne, Picardie, France but his current burial place is unknown. His surname is inscribed on the Buzancy monument as Candle.
