Ray Phillip Saffold was born on June 17, 1873 in Selma, Dallas County, Alabama. He entered the military service in California and served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a First Lieutenant in Company B, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He died from his wounds received in battle on July 27, 1918 in Aisne-Marne Offensive, World War I, in Paris due to the edema of the lungs following gunshot wound. He is now buried in Suresnes American Cemetery, Suresnes, France. His name is inscribed on the Buzancy monument under Company D of his unit.
