Louis August Steinmetz was born on June 21, 1892 in Hegeney, Departement du Bas-Rhin, Alsace, France. He was the son of Benedict and Catherine Raymond. He entered the military service in Ohio and served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private First Class in Company M, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action but declared "Missing" on July 21, 1918 and is memorialized on Tablets of the Missing, Aisne-Marne American Cemetery, Belleau, France. His name is inscribed on the Buzancy monument as a Private.
