When Herbert L. Griffin was born on June 10, 1895, in Tennessee, his father, Willis, was 23 and his mother, Lula, was 20. He had one brother and two sisters. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Corporal in HQ Company, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on July 18, 1918 (at the age of 23) in France and is now buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Columbia, Maury County, Tennessee, USA.
