When Donald E. Grills was born in 1924 in Indiana, his father, Hiley, was 23 and his mother, Eva, was 19. He had one brother and one sister. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Private First Class in Company A, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division. He was Killed in Action on January 1, 1945 and is now buried in Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery, Hombourg, Belgium.
