When George Leslie Rourke was born on May 5, 1894, in Rawdon, Quebec, Canada, his father, Joseph, was 32 and his mother, Elizabeth, was 22. He immigrated to the United States of America at age 4 in 1898 settling with his family in Easby, Cavalier, North Dakota. George was a farmer by occupation and enlisted in Machine Gun Company, 1st Infantry, North Dakota National Guard, at Grand Forks, on May 31, 1917; called into federal service, World War, on July 15, 1917; served in Machine Gun Company, 1st Infantry, North Dakota National Guard (Machine Gun Company, 164th Infantry), to Jan. 9, 1918; Company D, 2nd Machine Gun Battalion, 1st Division, to death; overseas from Dec. 15, 1917, to death; wounded, slightly, May 4, 1918. Engagements: Offensive: Aisne-Marne. Defensive: Montdidier-Noyon. Defensive Sectors: Ansauville (Lorraine); Cantigny (Picardy). Died, July 24, 1918, of wounds received in action. He was awarded the Silver Star for bravery posthumously. He is now buried in Suresnes American Cemetery, Suresnes, France.
