Lester D. Hayton entered the military service in Washington. He served in the U.S. Army during Wolrd War I as a Private First Class in Company F, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action but declared "Missing" on July 20, 1918 and is memorialized on Tablets of the Missing, Aisne-Marne American Cemetery, Belleau, France. His name is commemorated on the Buzancy monument in the MISSING IN ACTION section of the monument and ranked as a Private.
