When Edmond B. Smallridge was born in April 1899, his father, John, was 34 and his mother, Margaret, was 26. He had three siblings. He entered the military service in West Virginia and served in the U.S. Army during Wolrd War I as a Private in Company I, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action but declared "Missing" on July 21, 1918 (at the age of 19) and is memorialized on Tablets of the Missing, Aisne-Marne American Cemetery, Belleau, France. His name is commemorated on the Buzancy monument in the MISSING IN ACTION section of the monument.
