When John Sheridan Minch was born on September 21, 1901, in Beaver, Ohio, his father, Jacob, was 25 and his mother, Eva, was 21. He entered the military service in Indiana and served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private First Class in Company H, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action but declared "Missing" on July 21, 1918 and is memorialized on Tablets of the Missing, Aisne-Marne American Cemetery, Belleau, France. His name is commemorated on the Buzancy monument in the MISSING IN ACTION section of the monument.
