When Caro Everett Freeman was born on January 17, 1892, in Almond, North Carolina, his father, Harvey, was 19 and his mother, Catherine, was 16. He enlisted in the Army at Galveston, Texas on May 4, 1915 at age "23 3/12," and listed himself as a native of Swain Co., NC. He served in Company L, 19th Infantry until May 28, 1917, when he was transferred to Headquarters Company, 28th Infantry, 1st Division, with which he served in France until killed in action at St. Mihiel on October 9, 1918. Prior to his death he had fought in the battles of Cantigny, Mont d'Arly, Breuil, Ploissy, and Berzy Le Sec, and was at some point awarded a "Silver Star Citation (the forerunner of the Silver Star medal)." He was declared "Missing" and is memorialized on Tablets of the Missing, Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial, Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, Departement de la Meuse, Lorraine, France.
