When Adrian Cornelius Slootmaker was born on August 29, 1898, in Michigan, his father, Cornelius, was 39 and his mother, Anna, was 34. He had three brothers and one sister. He entered the military service in Connecticut and served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private First Class in the 101st Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry "Yankee" Division. He died on October 28, 1918 and is now buried in Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial, Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, Departement de la Meuse, Lorraine, France. His name is commemorated on the Belleau Church tablet in France but his name is inscribed as Adrin.
