George J. Gaudette was born in 1900 in New Britain, Hartford County, Connecticut. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Corporal in the 102nd Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry "Yankee" Division. He was Killed in Action on November 10, 1918 and is now buried in Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial, Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, Departement de la Meuse, Lorraine, France. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism in action north of Verdon, France, November 10, 1918. Corporal Gaudette volunteered to carry a message from his company commander to the commanding officer. Second Battalion, 102nd Infantry. He proceeded on this mission under severe machine gun fire and artillery fire and when about half the distance had been covered he was severely wounded in the right side by a machine gun bullet. Although mortally wounded Corporal Gaudette continued on his mission until he made the supreme sacrifice.
