Pilot of the B17 "Ensign Mary", SN 42.31648, code LF-H, which took off from Kimbolton in the UK on a bombing run to Aerodrome at Laon-Couvron on 16 Jun 1944. The aircraft was hit by flak and the entire crew, except for the pilot and the machinist, bailed out. LT MCHugh stayed with the craft, successfully steering the flaming aircraft away from the town of Pontpoint. He attempted to land on the plateau of Monvinet but died in the crash at 1853. He was awarded the Silver Cross for his heroic action. MACR 5988. LT Mac Hugh was from Chicago, Illinois.
