He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in the 103rd Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry "Yankee" Division. He died from his wounds received in battle on November 10, 1918 in a hospital in France and is now buried in Odd Fellows Lawn Cemetery and Mausoleum, Sacramento, Sacramento County, California, USA.
