Hugh O'Neil was born in 1922 in Massachusetts.. He served in the 19th Liaison Squadron in the China-Burma-India Theater.

He was killed in the Battle of Tengchong in China in 1944. He is remembered with a cenotaph in Tengchong, China.

Hugh served as a Staff Sergeant on L-5 #42-98839, 19th Liaison Squadron, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. He resided in Middlesex County, Massachusetts prior to the war. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on March 27, 1942 in Boston, Massachusetts. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Actor and also as Single, without dependents. Hugh was declared "Missing In Action" when his L-5 did not return to base while flying over China during the war. It is unclear if anyone else was on this flight. He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart. Service # 11068695
