Leroy Whittier Gardner was born on May 23, 1888 in Dennysville, Washington County, Maine. He was the son of Edwin R. and Ada Gardner of Dennysville. He married Rae Gertrude Jones of Nashua New Hampshire July 12, 1917 in Edmunds Maine and had a son Dean Leroy Gardner born May 24, 1918. Rae remarried in 1919 and resided in Massachusetts. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Corporal in the 104th Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry "Yankee" Division. He died on July 7, 1918 and is now buried in Aisne-Marne American Cem., Belleau, France. He also has a cenotaph located in Dennysville Cemetery, Dennysville, Washington County, Maine, USA.
