Joseph Kotlyn was born in 1888 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. He was the son of Thomas Kotlyn and Rosalie Velek Kotlyn. He enlisted in the Army on October 5, 1917 and served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in the 104th Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry "Yankee" Division. He died on June 16, 1918 and is now buried in Calvary Cemetery, Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, USA.
