Walter A. Gaska was born on November 27, 1910. Prior to entering the service on February 3, 1942, he was employed by the Cranberry colliery. Gaska had attended the West Hazleton schools and was a member of the Transfiguration church in West Hazleton. He received his training at Camp Blanding, Fla.; Fort Benning, Ga., and Camp Wheeler, Ga., then he was shipped to New Cumberland from where he was sent overseas. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Private First Class in the 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. Pfc. Gaska received the Purple Heart for wounds received in action in North Africa on April 27 of last year. After recuperating at a hospital somewhere in England, he rejoined his outfit on May 26, 1944. He was Killed in Action on November 17, 1944 in Germany and is now buried in Transfiguration Church Cemetery, West Hazleton, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, USA.
