Born 10 December 1898 at Jamaica Plains,MA, a decendent of Revolutionary War General Isreal Putman. Attended Harvard University before joining the Lafayette Flying Corps of the French Air Service in 1917. In June 1918 he joined the United States Air Service. Putnam was shot down and killed by Georg von Hantelmann. At the time of his death David Putnam was the American "Ace of Aces" with over 30 "kills", including 4 with the very difficult to fly Morane AI XXIX.
