Captain Charles M. Peal took off from Duxford, Cambridgeshire, station 357, in what was usually LtCol Olin Gilbert's plane, the P-47 Thunderbolt D-25-RE - 42-26449 HL-X. He was returning from his patrol mission over the town of Noyon, and, as he was passing over the railroad tracks of Crouy, 3km North-east of Soissons, saw a German munitions train. Having only a machine gun left at his disposal, he dove to strafe the train. The Germans opened up with flak fire, but the train blew up, taking the plane with it. He crashed at 0650 on a Monday, next to the railroad tracks.
