While additional details are still pending regarding his date of enlistment and training camps, with the coming of World War II, Odell stepped forward to serve his country and was assigned as a Private in the 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division (The Big Red One), U.S. Army. While it is not yet known how many battles Odell participated in, his storied regiment participated in the amphibious assault on North Africa (Operation Torch – 8 Nov 1942), followed by the battle at Kasserine Pass (19 Feb 1942), the invasion of Sicily (Operation Husky - 9 Jul 1943), and then being re-positioned for the amphibious assault at Omaha Beach at Normandy on June 6, 1944 (Operation Overlord).

George Odell Trout, age 29, is reported as killed in action on 30 Nov 1944, just as the 26th Regiment prepared to move into the Ardennes, and about 16 days before the Battle of the Bulge. He is now buried in Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery, Hombourg, Belgium.
