Corporal Harry A. Berg Jr., serial number 36375488 , born to Harry H. Berg and Ella E. Meig in Chicago heights, Illinois, 1921, entered the service in Chicago, Illinois, Sept 23, 1942. He had signed up for a 5 year hitch.

After receiving his training, he eventually was assigned to the 745th Tank Battalion which was activated at Camp Bowie, Texas in August 15th, 1942 and deployed for Europe on the Queen Elizabeth, August 19,1943 bound for Scotland.

Once there, the Battalion began training for amphibious operations near Swindon, Wiltshire England. The battalion moved from Weymouth, England to embarkation craft the first part of June, 1944 as they would join the assault force on June 6th, 1944 for operation Neptune where Harry would see his first action at Omaha Beach.

The Reconnaissnce group landed first, then Company B. Companies A and C landed on the 7th then other elements of the battalion on the 27th.

The battalion was briefly pulled back and replaced by the 735th for a reorganization and re-fit which enabled them to rejoin the 1st Infantry.

The 745th supported the 1st Infantry during the breakout from Normandy during Operation Cobra. Harry and his fellow tankers most likely observed the aerial bombardment on July 25th as they began their assault to the South and West the following day.

During this push, Harry was killed in action (KIA) on the 28th between the Normandy Beach head and Mortain, France.
